Gill Hemus was appointed Director of Human Resources in November 2007. She is responsible for the strategic management of a workforce of 4,250 and contributes to ensuring that the University is both efficient and effective.
Her division includes HR operational services, organisation development, training and diversity, employee relations, health and safety, and reward and planning.
The majority of her career has been spent in public service, largely in the NHS, and she has worked as a lecturer at the International Business School in Bremen, Germany, designing and delivering courses in global and European management.
In 2004 she was appointed Executive Director of Human and Corporate Services at what is now Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. In this post she led a review process that ensured cultural and behavioural change and developed a five-year HR strategy to underpin a new multimillion pound PFI hospital that brought together six hospitals on one site.
She held similar posts at Nottingham City Hospital NHS Trust, and at Fosse Health Trust where three separate organisations were combined into one autonomous organisation.
An English and psychology graduate of Glasgow University, Gill Hemus has a law degree from De Montfort University and diplomas in personnel administration and management. She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and served as a member of the National Capacity Board that looked at HR strategy for the NHS.
Most recently, she was elected North West Chair of Universities Human Resources, the professional organisation for HRM practitioners in universities in the UK and the Irish Republic.
