Norman Harrison was appointed Director Strategic Development with Babcock International in April 2010. He is responsible for developing strategic direction and growth of a number of business streams including civil nuclear services, power transmission, infrastructure, training and military support.
Babcock International is a FTSE 100 company with a diverse range of business capability including significant support to the Ministry of Defence and major input to civil nuclear activities including new nuclear build, nuclear decommissioning, waste management and environmental restoration. Babcock International provides strategic support and technical expertise to a broad range of customers worldwide.
Norman’s previous role was Chief Executive Officer of the UK Atomic Energy Authority he was appointed to this role in February 2007. Following Government endorsement of a new business strategy for UKAEA Norman successfully led UKAEA’s transformation into a vibrant new British company winning work in the public and private sectors. Norman led the sale of UKAEA of which Babcock International were the successful purchaser.
Norman's previous role with the UKAEA was as Director Dounreay Division to which he was appointed on 1 st November 2003. He has transformed the Dounreay site into a project focussed organisation, integrating expert staff from UKAEA's alliance partners to facilitate knowledge transfer and to ensure UKAEA utilises best practice from across both nuclear and non nuclear industries. Safety, security, environmental awareness and programme delivery are the key priorities for the UKAEA sites with Dounreay now a top performer within the NDA portfolio of decommissioning sites.
Norman's career before joining UKAEA was in the nuclear power generation sector. A native of Manchester and chemist by profession, he achieved a top national award when qualifying as a Graduate of the Royal Society of Chemistry. He was Station Director at Heysham 1 in Lancashire before being appointed Director of Sizewell B, British Energy's flagship PWR in Suffolk, the post he held prior to being appointed at Dounreay.
Norman and his wife Jacqueline live in Buckinghamshire. During rare moments of relaxation, Norman admits to being passionate about football and completely sold on opera, particular the works of the Italian composer, Puccini.
