Honorary Awards are conferred on men and women who have made major contributions to the academic work of the University, or who have earned distinction for their services associated more widely with education, business, culture, creative work or public service.
Honorary awards are conferred at faculty ceremonies.
Professor Robin Alexander was honoured for his outstanding contribution to primary education both throughout the UK and internationally, and for his distinguished leadership as Director of the Cambridge Primary Review, an independent enquiry into the condition and future of primary education in England with which MMU academics have a proud association.

The award to Mr Brian Cosgrove and Mr Mark Hall, former students and founders of Cosgrove Hall Films, recognised their distinguished achievements in creating some of TV’s best-loved children’s programmes and their inspirational example to young animators and film-makers. The animators and creators of Danger Mouse, Count Duckula and Chorlton and the Wheelies, won six BAFTAs and two International Emmys before retiring a few years ago.

Mr Ian Cumming OBE, Chief Executive Officer of the West Midlands Strategic Health Authority and a former MMU student, was honoured for his distinguished contribution to strategic leadership and medical education within the NHS and for the inspiration he represents to young healthcare scientists.

The award to His Honour Judge Iain Hamilton marked his distinguished work in the field of law and in particular his outstanding contribution to family and criminal justice. A Circuit Judge on the Northern Circuit and Designated Family Judge, Manchester, his encouragement and support of the University in inter-professional education and training provides a range of valuable opportunities for MMU staff, students and partners.

The Chief Executive Officer of Bruntwood, Mr Chris Oglesby, was honoured for his distinguished achievements in business and for his outstanding contribution to the region both through his business leadership and his charitable work. He is a founder-member of Greater Manchester’s Business Leadership Council which was established to advise the leaders of the Greater Manchester authorities.

The outstanding sporting achievements of Mr Scott Quinnell, former Welsh international rugby league and rugby union player, was recognised with an honorary award that also marked his valuable work as Development Director of the Dore Programme in assisting people of all ages to overcome special educational needs.

Ms Jane Robson, Managing Director at Next Sourcing Limited, was honoured for her distinguished achievements in the fashion industry and for her inspirational support of the University’s students, staff and graduates throughout her career.
