Accessibility statement

This statement applies to content published on the mmu.ac.uk website.  It does not apply to the various subdomains or other websites associated either with mmu.ac.uk or Manchester Metropolitan University.

The website is run by Manchester Metropolitan University.  We want everything we do to be accessible and we’re building our website so that it can be used by as many people as possible.

We’ve designed our website so that:

  • we meet the WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility standard;
  • you can use it on as many devices as possible and you have the same experience on each device
  • text is clear, simple and as easy to read as possible
  • you can navigate the website with different input devices (mouse, touch screen, keyboard, speech recognition software)

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you are disabled.

How accessible is our website?

We know that some parts of our website are not fully accessible and we’re working to ensure they are as soon as possible by fully rebuilding our website on a new platform.  We maintain an active programme of development, which includes addressing accessibility issues as they are found.

Older parts of the website which are hosted on our legacy platform may not be fully accessible.  This includes (but is not limited to) information about:

  • Business and Employers
  • International Partnerships
  • Faculty and department content

We are working through a programme to migrate all content from the old platform and expect to complete this in 2024.

We know there are some issues which need addressing on our new platform.  These include:

  • Ensuring all relevant content has alternative text
  • Ensuring all content renders correctly on different viewports and font sizes (Eg text is clipped on some pages)
  • Ensuring all element IDs are unique

Additionally, we know:

  • most older PDFs are not fully accessible
  • videos may not be fully captioned.
  • some very old content (less than 1% of the site) does not wrap text on smaller devices.
  • our website has a large number of contributors.  When content is published, we sometimes need to fix small issues affecting individual pages.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

The University is redeveloping its main website.  We aim to complete the redevelopment and migration of all content by the end of 2024.  This means we will build our website with accessibility standards and processes built in.

We monitor the accessibility of our website through clear guidelines, tools and governance to ensure we continue to maintain and improve the accessibility of our website.

Additionally, we continue to work with content contributors to help ensure all content is accessible.
