Switch on to your environmental responsibilities

Recycling at your halls

Its everyone’s responsibility to make sure that we reduce our impacts on the environment. At your halls we’ve made it easier for you to recycle paper, card, plastic, glass and cans by placing portable recycling bags in all of your kitchens.

You’re the one whose responsible for making sure that you recycle…all you need to do is either take the portable recycling bags to the external bins outside or by empty into the recycling stations on your floor. Find out more and get involved.

Student Switch Off

If you live in Cavendish, Cambridge, Broomhurst, Daisy Bank, Booth Halls, Davenport, Harley or Barlow halls you’re already a part of this major campaign.

Student Switch Off is a competition to find the most energy efficient halls across our Manchester and Crewe campuses.

As if saving energy wasn’t incentive enough, the hall that saves the most energy wins a blow out end of year party – and the more energy saved, the bigger the party! Find out more and get involved.

Zero Waste… Get involved!

Since 2009 our Zero Waste campaign at your halls has helped reduce waste to landfill by some 30 tonnes by reusing your unwanted materials, and last year we collected over 16 tonnes of items you no longer wanted!

Everything went to local charities in Manchester. We need your help us increase this figure by getting involved before you move out at the end of the year and donate food, pot, pans, crockery, kitchen equipment, books, clothes and bedding.

All things go to charity and all we ask is that it’s clean and in good condition! Find out more and get involved.

Want to help out?

We’re always looking out for environment reps to help out with campaigns and event running at your halls of residence. If you want to recycle more, save more energy be get involved in encouraging others to do the same contact the environment team!

How to avoid damage charges

Damage that is caused in the halls detracts from the quality of life at MMU for you and future students. In order to maintain the standards it is necessary for us to charge for making good any damage that is caused.

It is important that you keep your room clean and tidy throughout the year and report any damages or faults to the hall reception as they happen.

You are responsible for the cleaning of your own study bedroom and any en-suite provision that you may have.

Here are a few Cleaning Tips that should help you avoid any unwanted charges:

  • For communal kitchens, establish a cleaning rota so that all the cleaning is equally shared.
  • Don’t let dishes pile up. Wash up as you go along.
  • Wipe up spills as you go. Don’t allow stains to build up especially in your microwave and on the cooker as they become more difficult to remove as they are repeatedly heated.
  • Wipe down your shower and sink after you have used it, this will keep your shower/sink mould free.
  • Use a toilet brush and a good toilet cleaner to regularly clean the toilet.
  • Vacuum the carpets and mop floors regularly. Most halls are able to loan vacuum cleaners and mops and buckets to residents.

If you have cleaned regularly throughout the year, avoiding charges should be relatively easy, but when you’re packing up and moving out at the end of the year:

  • Empty your room and flat of all belongings.
  • Remove all rubbish from your bedroom/flat.
  • Clean your bathroom and toilet and dust and vacuum all surfaces.
  • Empty your fridge and freezer and dispose of the contents.

If any items are left in your room/flat after your departure they will be disposed of and any charges for disposal and cleaning will be invoiced to you directly.

Student Bedroom

If damage occurs in your bedroom (or en-suite if you have one) you will receive an invoice from the Residential Facilities Manager indicating the cost of the damage and how to make payment.

Communal Areas

The shared bathroom and kitchen areas are cleaned regularly (check schedules), although it is still your responsibility to do your own washing up and leave surfaces clear after use, (check out cleaning tips)

If damage occurs in communal areas in your hall then the Residential Facilities Manager will investigate informally at first by asking a few questions in the hall to try to identify those responsible. This information is treated confidentially.
If relevant information is given and those responsible for the damage are identified, then the cost of repair and replacement will be charged to them, if individuals are not identified then the cost of the damage is divided up between the residents of the flat or those students who have access to the area affected.

A list of damage charges is available in your Terms of Occupancy

What do I do if I want to live in Halls next academic year?

Limited places are available for current students wishing to apply to live in halls for the next academic year.

You should make an application for accommodation online between 4th April and 30th April 2011.

Priority will be given to new students after this date.

If you do not wish to live in University Halls we strongly recommend you contact Manchester Student Homes for information about privately owned student halls and student housing.

Moving out at the end of your contract

You must vacate your room and hand in your keys by 12 noon on the Saturday at the end of the contract period.

Failure to comply with these requirements may result in additional accommodation fees and charges for replacement keys. Any damage, breakage or loss to your room or its contents must be reported in writing before you leave (if you have not reported it earlier).

At the end of the academic year, please leave your room in the same condition you found it on arrival. Failure to do this may result in a charge to you.

Tell your bank, friends, academic department, University library etc. about your change of address several weeks before your move out of Hall.

All mail delivered to the Hall after you have left will be returned to the sender. No forwarding of mail will be undertaken.
