Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) is working to create a new community campus at Birley Fields in Hulme.
The site – bordered by Stretford Road, Old Birley Street and Princess Road – has been earmarked for development since clearance in the 1990s.
The plans to relocate MMU’s Faculties of Education and Health include student residences, car parking and facilities for community use.
If the planning application gets the green light, MMU will be investing £120 million in a highly environmentally sustainable development, which will reduce the carbon footprint of our current operation by 60%. The University would also be obliged to operate a green travel plan which aims to minimise car use.
The campus would herald changes in local services, such as:
The elements of the scheme which are finalised are:
The remainder of the application is in outline only. Buildings and the layout may change through detailed design or according to future need. For instance only 500 student rooms will be built in the first phase. Although we are applying for outline permission to build 1,200, this figure represents the maximum number and could be significantly reduced if demand falls.
