    BOBST is the World‚s leading supplier of equipment and services to packaging manufacturers in the folding carton, corrugated board and flexible materials industries. Their core business being the supply of vacuum roll coating platforms to film producers for the food packaging market.

    Having recognised the strategic need to develop new revenue streams via the application of higher-value, innovative technology, a 3-year PhD level KTP was established with MMU to access academic expertise in coating deposition processes and surface characterisation techniques.

    The Project

    To enable the application of innovative technology, by developing conversion processes for AlOx coated films that enhance barrier effectiveness, printability and retortability.

    To develop a new generation of self-powering, trackside sensors and instrumentation for the rail industry, using state-of-the-art power harvesting and latest generation wireless communications for track monitoring at remote locations.

    Motherwell Tank Gauging is the UK’s only manufacturer of custody transfer tank gauging and overfill prevention systems. They offer a complete solution to tank level gauging requirements, with products including Radar Tank Level Gauges, Mechanical Float-Operated Level Gauges and a range of other sensors, control units and associated computer systems to monitor this range of sensors and provide response to events such as overfill.

    The Project

    To develop an intelligent and versatile set of electronic systems and associated software to provide effective tank gauging and protection, to enhance the company’s product range and accelerate business growth.

    To accelerate current planned growth by developing a design-led, mass-customised, holonic business model based on a technology-driven manufacturing system and adaptable, responsive operating culture.

    Initial Packaging is a manufacturer of flexible packaging, ranging from basic mailing envelopes to state of the art security pouches used by sectors such as banking. The vast majority of products are manufactured on-site at their premises in Widnes. The company has annual sales of £7m and 36 employees.

    To transform the company’s existing production-driven business model, by creating a market-driven business providing access to new markets through sector leading digital marketing and building a platform to underpin sustained growth.

    Quick Controls Limited

    Quick Controls Limited (QCL) was setup in 1986 to deliver computer-based solutions to various industries around the World. It grew steadily from its original base (selling touch screens developed by a sister company) to become a software and hardware supplier for the retail sector, with blue-chip clients such as Virgin Active, John Lewis and The Co-operative Group. Following a strategic decision in 2006, it was agreed that QCL would pursue a niche, virtual, fitness instructor product for the leisure market and then (following further evolutions) a dance and exercise product for primary schools. Today, QCL provide exercise-based, educational software products under the ‘Cyber Coach Smart’ range into primary schools in the UK and Ireland, with around 1,500 live subscriptions currently.

    The Project

    QCL is seeking to establish new product development processes and capability, by embedding methodologies based on cutting-edge, contextualised, interdisciplinary research that resides within the University‘s Faculty of Education. This capability will enable QCL to enhance and augment their product range, via the development of innovative web-enabled, multimedia educational products aimed at improving learning outcomes.The approach being embedded is innovative as it is based on non-traditional teaching methods, using a combination of subject knowledge and utilising creative and interactive delivery mechanisms..

    Laila’s Fine Foods was established in 1986, in the home kitchen of Laila Remtulla, manufacturing hand prepared Indian products for sale in local delicatessen and regional supermarket Booths. Today, the family-run business occupies a 33,000 sq. foot factory in Bispham, on the northern outskirts of Blackpool, specialising in authentic eastern and western ready meals for retail and food service markets.

    This two Associate KTP was established to transform the company’s production operation and real-time information systems capability to create an efficient, agile and sustainable manufacturing system to underpin continued high growth.

    Positive Steps Oldham is a company limited by guarantee. It is a registered charity with a Board of Trustees, members of which are drawn from Oldham’s public, private, education and training sector. They provide a range of targeted and integrated services to young people and adults, which includes: careers advice, family support, the young carers service, sexual health and substance misuse services, the youth justice service, healthy schools, support for young people who go missing from home and help for adults to gain access to employment.

    The Project

    The KTP will embed wide-ranging, effective practice within youth justice in Greater Manchester by enhancing the ability of practitioners to link theory to practice (to enhance interventions with children and young people) and will embed a knowledge-base and research capability that will provide more inclusive ways to work with children and young people in the criminal justice system.

    To develop Advanced Metering Infrastructure - a smart mobile water metering device, with transient surge monitoring and reflective billing capability to meet market demands.

Kirkstall‘s Quasi Vivo® system consists of commercially available, inter-connected cell culture chambers. The technology provides a way to model the behaviour of multiple human organs interconnected by a flow system that mimics the flow of blood in the body.

    Their principal activity is the development and distribution (by licence or sale) of multi-fuel engine control technology for use in the heavy duty diesel engine sector (6-50 litres).
