Listening to Communities

MMU is pioneering new forms of public engagement to try and work more effectively with local communities. We are actively trying to focus on finding ways to listen to what people want, and to involve them in ‘two-way’ collaborative work.

Supporting these changes is the Manchester Beacon for Public Engagement. The Beacon is a partnership of:

  • The University of Manchester
  • Manchester Metropolitan University
  • The University of Salford
  • The Museum of Science and Industry
  • Manchester: Knowledge Capital

Its aims are to bring about a cultural change in the way that universities listen to and respond to the needs of local communities.

MMU Public Engagement Fellowship scheme

An example of this type of working in practice is the MMU Public Engagement Fellowship scheme. Over two weeks, over 2600 local people voted online for their favourite community engagement schemes put forward by MMU staff.

Read about the winners in more detail.
