The Centre for Learning & Teaching (CeLT) disseminates good practice in teaching and learning, provides staff development programmes and co-ordinates Communities of Practice, including the PDP and Employability community.   • The Careers Service

    The Careers Service

    The Careers Service offers professional advice and resources and is keen to work alongside academic colleagues in creating innovative and tailored resources to deliver this agenda. Examples of current teaching and employability resources are listed below:

    • ’Futures‘; a Web CT employability unit at level 5 which encourages reflective learning; includes self assessment, occupational choice, work experience and how to market skills and experience effectively in CVs and applications.
    • CoMMUni, MMU‘s own student and staff volunteering bureau, providing many opportunities and training. CoMMUni can work collaboratively with courses in the provision of suitable volunteering placements
    • Mentormatch – e-mentoring for students by alumni and employers
    • The ‘Go!’ Employability Portal – practical suggestions to develop employability for all students
    • Short self-study Web CT tutorials on interviews, applications and CVs/covering letters
    • Classroom workshop packs on work experience, assessment centres and psychometrics, applications and interviews
    • Longitudinal surveys and graduate destination reports for your course. See also the information for tutors

  • MMU Professional Passport

    MMU Professional Passport

    The MMU Professional Passport offers the students the opportunity to demonstrate, via a simulated application process, the employability skills and competencies which they have developed in the course of their degree. Employers, careers advisers and academic staff are actively involved in the process.

  • The Student Union

    The Student Union

    The Student Union offers a variety of opportunities and training to enhance student employability, including part-time jobs and work with clubs and societies.

    Manchester students can register for part-time work within the university such as student ambassador, by emailing jobs4students@mmu.ac.uk. In Cheshire, these vacancies are handled by the Student Union Jobshop.

  • Enterprise

    Enterprise

    Innospace is Manchester Metropolitan University‘s graduate business incubator for start-ups offering a creative, stimulating and supportive environment at low cost, together with access to business advisers, mentors and workshops.

    Students and staff may wish to get involved with the growing number of business competitions and enterprise opportunities to get first-hand experience of running a business or social enterprise. If you are interested in developing enterprise in the curriculum, please contact Clare Schofield, MMU’s Enterprise Champion.

    Engaging with Employers

    Employer or alumni involvement can greatly enrich your programmes in a variety of ways:

    • Providing case studies for work-related learning
    • Presentations and marketing material
    • Work experience and projects for your students
    • Up-to-date labour market information and new developments
    • Individual mentoring, see Mentormatch
    • Part-time jobs and graduate vacancies which can also be advertised freely through the vacancy service on the Careers website

    Additional Resources

    The Higher Education Academy publishes a variety of employability resources which are useful for academic staff including a series of guides covering all aspects of employability and enterprise. Also on this site are the Student employability profiles by subject which relate to the QAA subject benchmarks.
