Environmental Management Systems

The Laurence Building was given an overhaul to improve energy consumption and Energy Performance Certificate ratings from an ‘E’ to a ‘B’. The project cost £153,500 and delivered annual savings of £23,750 alongside saving 79.6 tonnes of CO2.

It’s imperative that we have strategies in place to make MMU environmentally sustainable, and these strategies are helping us to define the issues we face, and to develop the right answers.

An Environmental Management System (EMS) provides a structured framework for managing environmental impact.

Our EMS is EcoCampus, an award scheme for the higher education sector that allows universities to be recognised for implementing a phased Environmental Management System and to reduce the risk of non-compliance with environmental legislation.

The scheme is equivalent to ISO 14001, which is the international environmental management system (EMS) standard, and the British guidance standard BS 8555.

It aims to encourage, reward and provide tools to help universities to improve their environmental sustainability through changes in operational and management practices.
