Sustainable Procurement

As a major contributor to the North West economy, MMU’s purchasing needs are bigger than most, but we need to minimise the effects of our buying on the environment.

From the second we buy a product we’re contributing to its environmental impact. If we can make the right purchasing decisions we can have a positive impact on the environment, the economy and society in general by:

  • Reducing whole life costs
  • Minimising damage to the environment
  • Conserving natural resources
  • Reducing pollution
  • Reducing waste for landfill
  • ‘Future proofing’ supply chains and investments

Have a look at our Value for Money Strategy which has been developed to ensure that we make the best use of our resources to achieve the desired output, and maximise the benefits.

If you’re one of our suppliers, or would like to be in the future, you need to think about the sustainability of your business processes. We want to work with like-minded organisations, and buy sustainably. You can find out more by looking at our Environmental Sustainability Policy.

HEFCE’s carbon reduction target and strategy for higher education in England suggests that sustainable procurement can double the sector’s overall emission figures. Our Environmental Sustainability Policy outlines our commitment to developing a sustainable procurement policy.

Fairtrade

Fairtrade aims to alleviate poverty and promote sustainable development. It was created to give economically disadvantaged producers and workers the opportunity to make a fair living. The use of the Fairtrade mark allows consumers to choose products from farmers and workers who have access to a fair deal.

MMU achieved Fairtrade status in 2008, and we’re continually increasing the number of Fairtrade products we sell. We work hard to promote Fairtrade and take part in regular campaigns, including Fairtrade Fortnight.

MMU also recognises the environmental impact of food production, and has produced a sustainable food policy statement .pdf, 168k that reflects current activity and actions that our Facilities Catering Service will seek to implement over the next 2 years.
