We’ve installed rainwater harvesting systems which collect rainwater from the roof area at our new Exercise and Sports Science building in Crewe. The system supplies rainwater to the WC and urinal flushing cisterns saving around 881m³ of water, equivalent to £2,060 per year.
Water is a limited resource and we’re working to ensure we do our bit to conserve stocks. We’re developing conservation and bottled water policies and making sure that new building designs and retrofits make efficient use of water by introducing rain water harvesting and sustainable urban drainage systems.
These systems filter water from the roof and take it to an underground storage tank. The rainwater is the used for the toilets and urinals in the building. Even cleverer, the water supply is linked to the lighting which has sensors that switch off when there’s no one around. This means that when an area is empty not only do the lights go out; the water supply shuts off too.
You can buy a bottle of One Love water at many outlets across the University. One Love water is a truly ethical alternative to other bottle water brands. All profits go to funding Playpumps® in Africa.
