Green Impact

What is Green Impact?

Green your department, have fun and win prizes.

Green Impact is a fun, simple and innovative program that inspires staff and students to collectively green Manchester Metropolitan University buildings. The best part about Green Impact is that everyone gets acknowledged for their hard work and celebrates collective achievements at the end of the program in an amazing awards ceremony. The changes made through our ‘Green Champions’ are sustained and a legacy is created.

Send to it to your Green Impact Co-ordinators Robert and Laura. We recommend that you build a team as large as possible so that as much support is given to greening your work place. • Step 4 Be an auditor and tour the departments, ticking off the amazing green actions completed by the ‘Green Teams’.
  • Step 5 Attend our fantastic Green Impact Awards ceremony with guest appearances, presentations and awards for all your great efforts to inspire positive environmental change at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Your ‘Green champions’ work through clear and easy to implement criteria covering every aspect of sustainability: from biodiversity, sustainable travel and fair-trade, to energy, waste and locally sourced food. The workbook is designed to be accessible to anyone, even if you’ve never participated in a greening initiative ever before. You may find that you are probably doing a lot of the actions already.

Once you’ve handed in your workbook, everyone’s efforts get celebrated at an amazing Green Impact awards ceremony at the end of the year and you get to find out what award you’ve won, have fun, meet your other ‘Green Champions’ and eat delicious food.

Green Campaigns

We will be communicating all the progress made on the other significant campaigns the Facilities Environment Team are running throughout the academic year. Stay tuned for:

Student Switch Off

Student Switch Off is an energy saving competition between halls of residence, it aims to reduce energy consumption by you making small changes turning lights off where possible, wearing extra layers instead of putting the heating on, or putting lids on pans when cooking!

This year we have kick-started a fresh campaign for the students living in MMU halls. Last years results have been confirmed and the savings are massive.

  • Electricity usage was reduced by an average of 10.7%…
  • This saved a total of 250,644kWh…
  • Which translates to more than £20,000 less electricity expenditure.
  • Over 135 tonnes of CO2 saved.
  • Student Switch off accounted for approximately 10% of the shrinkage in the universities carbon footprint from last year.

Zero Waste

Zero Waste is an Recycling /Reuse scheme run by MMU, Manchester City Council, MMUnion, People and Planet, Oxfam and local charities to promote halls of residence students and staff to donate all your reusable and recyclable goods to others in need. You can save everything from; electrical goods, tinned food, bed sheets, trainers, shoes, pots, pans, food and everything in between. Look out for Green bags being posted out to your rooms and offices in the new year.

In 2010 we recorded a massive 17 tonnes haul of students and staff unwanted items from landfill.

This campaign contributes greatly towards achieving the University‘s aspirations towards Zero Waste, and plays a huge role in raising student and staff awareness around the issue of waste- especially with regard to reuse and recycling.

Many thanks to all those staff and students who contributed towards making Zero Waste the success it was this year and we look forward to achieving bigger and better things in 2012!

iCYCLE

iCYCLE is a new bike hire scheme run by Cycle Recycle on the ground floor of MMUnion. Providing weekly rental for new and refurbished bikes is £8 and £5 respectively, reduced to £6 and £4.50 if the student rents for the full academic year – cheaper than a weekly bus pass. Green Impact participants get bike hire 50% off, so get down there and rent your bike and win points for your ’Green Impact‘ team for sustainable travel.

Fair Trade Fortnight 27th Feb 2012 – 11th March 2012

This years Fair Trade Fortnight is marking the 20th Anniversary since the launch of Fair Trade with the ’Take a step‘ campaign theme. It can be a small step like swapping your coffee choice to Fair Trade or a big step like asking everyone in your office to purchase Fair Trade coffee for daily use. Whatever you are doing get involved and get people talking about and supporting Fair Trade.

Earlier this year MMU Embroidery department students and staff from all three years got together with other around the world to break the Guinness World Record with a 3,427.94 metre line of handmade cotton bunting.

Let‘s make a Sustainable Planet

The LMSP Staff Student forum is a place for all MMU students and staff to express their ideas and concerns regarding environmental and ethical issues on campus.

From recycling in halls to more fair-trade products on campus, come along to create a vision of a sustainable future for MMU!

The 1st event is a launch with guest talks from:

John Hindley Head of Environmental Strategy at MMU

Steve Conner Chief Executive of Creative Concern Manchester

Robert Croll and Laura Williams MMU‘s Greener Living Coordinators

Go Green Week6th – 11th February 2012

Go Green Week is People & Planet’s annual national week of action on climate change in schools, colleges and universities. Students hold a week of activities to raise awareness every February and launch Going Greener projects. People & Planet groups join staff & student unions to create a positive transition vision of their universities and showcase practical solutions for a low-carbon future.

Falling so close to Valentine’s Day, the theme for 2011 was ‘Love your Future, Love your Climate’. Students from across the UK also came together for a day of co-ordinated stunts to tell the government to cut the carbon, not education.
