New recycling facilities for staff are coming soon to your building

your bin will go and this will happen

Bin Your BinWhat do I need to do?

Over the summer vacation (June – August 2011) we’re replacing office bins with Recycling Hubs as part of our 2020 vision to become a Zero Waste to landfill University.

When recycling hubs arrive in your area, House Service staff won’t empty office bins and there will be 4 weeks in which you can ‘Bin Your Bin’.

Leave your bin by the door to your office so House services staff can collect it, or keep your bin for 4 weeks and empty the contents into a recycling hub at the end of the working day. After 4 weeks all office bins will be collected throughout the University.

Get your new desktop recycler

To assist you with this new process, we’ll provide desktop recycling units which can be used to take your waste to a hub where you can separate them at the end of the working day.

You can collect a desktop recycler from a designated area in your building. If you are unsure where this is, please contact your local House Services Team.

Why are we doing this?

We are one of the region’s major economic contributors and have a responsibility to become more sustainable by taking clear steps to reduce the environmental impacts of our business activities.

Why recycle?

Reprocessing of wastes saves the use of virgin materials, and recycling – especially if it happens locally – cuts down on our carbon emissions.

Starting from the simple philosophy ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ our goals are to:

  • Achieve a 40% recycling rate within the first year of roll-out of internal waste and recycling facilities
  • Reduce waste to landfill by 60% by 2016
  • Be a Zero Waste to landfill University by 2020
We are working with Veolia Environmental Services to ensure that 100% of our waste is diverted from landfill
  • Recycle 90% of all demolition waste

Where can I collect my desktop recycler?
Collect a Desktop Recycler from a designated area in your building. If you are unsure where this is, please contact your local house services team.
Where are the Recycling hubs located?

Waste and Recycling hubs are located in shared areas such as reception, lobby and corridor areas and in some open plan offices. Provisions are also located in all student learning areas subject to room capacity and frequency of use: this includes lecture theatres, seminar rooms, computer drop-ins, library services and studio areas.

Who is responsible for emptying the Waste and Recycling hubs?

House Services are responsible for ensuring that the Waste and Recycling hubs are emptied on a regular basis. If there are any problems with a Waste and Recycling hub (i.e. they are overflowing), then you should contact your local house services team.

Are disability needs of staff taken into consideration?

Yes. A number of adjustments can be put in place to ensure access to Waste and Recycling Facilities. We are working with the Disabled Staff Forum to encourage disabled members of staff to contact us so that – where required – reasonable adjustments are made.
If you have any specific questions email wasteandrecycling@mmu.ac.uk

I have a permanent or temporary disability and I’m unable to access the Waste and Recycling Hubs, what should I do?

Your line manager should contact the Waste and Recycling Team to arrange an individual assessment if requested.

What can I recycle?

Please see the ‘What can be recycled?’ section of this web page.

Why are we introducing Waste and Recycling hubs?

We’re one of the region’s major economic contributors and have a responsibility to become more sustainable by taking clear steps to reduce the environmental impacts of our business activities.

We’ve developed a robust Waste Management Strategy which sets out how we’ll achieve Zero Waste to landfill by 2020 – Internal recycling facilities are the first step towards this!

Is the University legally required to provide recycling facilities?

Yes, the EU Waste Framework Directive requires all Member States to take the necessary measures to ensure waste is recovered or disposed of without endangering human health or causing harm to the environment.

It also requires that we take appropriate measures to encourage firstly, the prevention or reduction of waste production and its harmfulness and secondly the recovery of waste by means of recycling, re-use or reclamation or any other process with a view to extracting secondary raw materials, or the use of waste as a source of energy.

What happens to the office bins?

Where office bins are in good condition, we’ll redistribute for reuse in all of our halls of residence. All others will be reused elsewhere if feasible, and if not, recycled.

How can I find out how much my service area/ building is recycling?

Reports which detail the amount of materials recycled and recycling rates will be provided to each faculty on a quarterly basis.

We have a paper shredder in our office. Can shredded paper go in the paper recycling?

Yes, but please do not put large quantities of shredded waste into the paper/card recycling bin. Instead, contact your local house services team to arrange that your shredded wastes are collected and emptied straight into our external recycling facilities by House Services staff.

I currently have a paper recycling bin in my office. Will I still be able to use this and have it emptied by House Services staff?

Any existing recycling facility not part of the Recycling hubs, will not be serviced by House Service staff. You should take your paper and card wastes to the allotted Recycling hubs.

Where will the Recycling Hub be situated in my building? Will there be more than one location?

There are numerous Recycling hubs situated on each floor of each building, to help you there are maps available for each building.

Can I recycle CDs?

Yes, put all your non-confidential CDs and DVDs in the ‘Mixed Recycling’ bin units. We can accept CDs & DVDs in both the soft & hard plastic cases/wallet.
