LGBT Allies

Allies are defined by Stonewall as 'individuals who do not identify as LGBT and believe that lesbian, gay, bi, and trans people should be free to be themselves and reach their full potential'.

Allies play an important role in fostering inclusive environments for everyone and advancing fair treatment of LGBT staff.

The LGBT Forum asks that allies:

  • Listen to and support colleagues wishing to talk about LGBT issues
  • Be willing to signpost staff and students to sources of help and support, should the need arise
  • Show a visible commitment to LGBT equality
  • Challenge all discriminatory or inappropriate behaviour and language

Allies are also encouraged to join the LGBT Staff Forum to keep up to date on upcoming awareness-raising events and the issues affecting LGBT staff.
