University exchange programmes

Most of our students who study abroad do so through exchanges. This means living overseas, enrolling and taking classes at a host university and being assessed by their tutors.

The courses you are eligible to study overseas will depend on the course you are enrolled on with us. You’ll need to be getting good grades to be eligible.

Exchanges usually last at least a semester, but more often the whole academic year. Depending on your course and the length of your exchange, the units you study abroad could be part of your existing degree or become an additional fourth year.

You can explore our partner institutions across the European and Worldwide Exchange programmes below. If you have any questions, please contact your subject’s exchange coordinator

You can also come to one of our drop-in sessions. They are held every Wednesday from 9:00am to 12:00pm or 1:00pm to 4:00pm, in the Business School Student Hub.

Funding your exchange

How much an exchange costs depends on where you go, for how long, what you study and your lifestyle when you get there.

When you take part in an exchange organised by Manchester Metropolitan, you still pay your tuition fees to us - but don’t pay any to your host university.

They may ask you to pay for some study materials, language classes or optional projects, which you will be told about when making your application. And if you’re studying a full year abroad, you may qualify for a substantial reduction in your tuition fees paid to us, which can help with additional expenses.

As you would in the UK, you’ll still have to pay your living costs - accommodation, food and travel - and you may need vaccinations as well as travel and health insurance. You’ll also need to get a visa and a passport, both of which have their own costs.

Living costs very much depend on where you go and for how long. Some countries will need proof that you can pay your living costs when considering your visa application - savings statements, student loan agreements and sponsorship letters all count.

Where to find funding and scholarships

Funding may be available to help with the additional costs of studying abroad. How much you get can also vary quite a lot, from a one off payment of £500 to several thousand pounds during your stay abroad.

Sources of funding include:

I have made lifelong friends and have had the opportunity to travel to continents I'd never been to. My year abroad has given me more confidence in myself and with the new skills I've gained, I now look forward to what I can accomplish after my degree.
