For businesses Corporate giving

Your company can receive tax benefits from making gifts to charity. As an educational institution, MMU has charity status; it is an ‘exempt charitable body’ (the official charity term) and so does not have a registered charity number.

There are a variety of ways in which your company can make a gift to MMU and there are many meaningful and vital projects that you could consider supporting, including:

  • Providing a student scholarship and naming it after your company, business or an individual;
  • Funding a World-Class Professional Bursary and naming it after your company. We are committed to improving the employability of our students by providing entrepreneurial and career-related schemes – your company could provide one such opportunity in the form of a Bursary.
  • Funding a student prize in a department or faculty linked to your profession or business, such as in the Business School, Hospitality, Art and Design, Engineering – the list of opportunities is vast;
  • Supporting one of MMU’s exciting new building projects which aim to strengthen the student experience with emphasis on World-Class Facilities – with naming opportunities inside the new buildings.

We are always happy to discuss other funding opportunities with prospective donors, so please contact us for a confidential discussion or meeting.

Getting staff involved

An increasing number of employers are using charitable giving as part of successful employee relations programmes. This could include:

  • Joining your staff in designating The MMU Fund as your annual charity.
  • Supporting staff who want to give regularly, by introducing payroll giving whereby donations are deducted from an employee’s pay before tax is calculated.

Tax benefits

There are tax benefits to making a donation to the University.

When a company makes a donation, it gets tax relief by deducting the amount given from its profits and pays less corporation tax. As of April 2011, the main rate of corporation tax is 27%, reducing to 24% in annual increments of 1%, and the rate for smaller companies is 20%.

The company should retain any correspondence with MMU about the donation as evidence of the gift.
