MMU is required to undertake and publish Equality Impact Assessments (EIAs) as an integral part of the organisation’s commitment to promoting Equality and Diversity to staff and students, and as part of its legal obligations. This is set out in the Public duties legislation of the Race Relations Act amendment 2000, Disability Discrimination Act 2005, the Equalities Act 2006 and the University’s forthcoming Single Equality Scheme (covering the protected characteristics of Age, Disability, Gender Reassignment, Race, Religion and/or Belief or Lack of Belief, Sex and Sexual Orientation). In preparation for the forthcoming Equality Act 2010, where possible, Religion/Belief and Sexual Orientation have also been included in the EIA screenings.
The EIA project commenced in September 2007, with its main objectives being to:
- provide co-ordination, support and guidance to policy owners and developers to enable them to carry out Equality Impact Assessments for their current policies/procedures/services/practices/guidelines (referred to as ‘policies’)
- provide support to policy developers to enable them to build EIA principles into the policy development process, thus helping to mainstream and embed EIA.
- raise awareness with staff and key stakeholders about the need to equality proof day to day decisions, actions and plans, thus ensuring that EIA is sustained beyond the life of the EIA project.
Part of MMU’s legal obligations is to publish its EIAs, ensuring it is an open and transparent process. Please be aware that this is an ongoing process, and there will be updates made regularly by the Equality and Diversity team to both the Staff and Student EIA pages.
