Professor Alun Williams

My profile

Biography

I’m Professor of Sport and Exercise Genomics and my main research interest is the genetics of human physical performance and health. I hold honorary research positions at University College London and Swansea University, and I’ve been elected as a Fellow of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences and as a Fellow of The Physiological Society.

My current research projects investigate the genetic characteristics of elite sport performance, and the physical changes that occur during testosterone suppression in trans women. I regularly publish and review for leading peer-reviewed journals in my field and also advise sports governing bodies regarding sex category eligibility policies.

I’ve written several position stands / expert statements on scientific and ethical issues in sport, covering scientific and ethical issues related to the use of genetic technology in sport and exercise, as well as the complex and controversial issue of eligibility for sex categories in sport.  I also regularly speak at conferences and other events on these topics.

Interests and expertise

My area of expertise lies broadly in the upper limits of human physical performance. I have published widely on genetic profiles of elite athletes, the improvements in performance that can result from physical training, and sport-related injuries, as well as ethical and policy issues. Some of my current areas of interest focus on elite athletes in several sports, the genetic basis of concussion injury, and the role of testosterone on physical performance in different groups such as athletes with differences in sex development (DSDs) and transgender athletes.

Impact

I have served as independent expert witness at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. I’ve written several consensus statements, and advise sports governing bodies, regarding sex and age categories in sport, and the use of genetic technology in sport.  I communicate widely regarding the often misleading messages communicated by genetic testing companies about their products available to the general public and elite sports organisations.

Genetics and ethics collide at the pinnacle of sport

Manchester Met's research into the genetics of elite performance has proved pivotal in framing and understanding the legal and ethical issues surrounding intersex athletes and the integrity of sport.

Teaching

I’ve supervised many research students to successful completions in sport science, genetics and exercise physiology.  I’m always willing to consider applications for PhDs and other higher degrees from promising students.

I also teach on our MSc and BSc programmes, focussing on genetics in sport and exercise, as well as other related aspects of exercise physiology.
