How & when to pay

One of the biggest concerns of overseas students is how and when they have to pay their tuition fees. All overseas students who pay their own fees must pay a deposit towards their tuition fees prior to arrival in the UK of between £3,000 and £5,000. The amount of your tuition fee deposit will be confirmed in your offer letter.

Your deposit can be paid online – please do not forget to attached a copy of the email payment acknowledgement to your visa application.

Students who have met all the conditions of their offer and paid the full tuition fee deposit will receive a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) number. With this CAS number, you can apply for your Tier 4 student visa.

It can take several weeks for your student visa to be processed; you should therefore make arrangements for your student visa application well in advance of the course start date. For more information and advice please go to the UK Visas website.

After paying their initial deposit, students can pay the remainder of their tuition fees in full, before or at enrolment. Students also have the option to pay the remainder of their tuition fees in 3 equal instalments (further details will be displayed during the online enrolment process. These instalments can be paid). In brief instalment these can be paid by Direct Debit (UK bank accounts only) or by most credit or debit cards.

Please do not delay - opening a UK bank account can take some time. For further help see our bank accounts webpage.

Alternatively, students can contact a member of the Finance Team after enrolment and set up a Recurring Card Payment plan using either a Visa or MasterCard. These options are open to all students.

Early Payment Discount

Overseas students who pay their tuition fees in full by Friday 16 September 2011 receive an early payment discount of £100 (providing course fees are in excess of £7,000 and no other debts are outstanding on the account). Payments must reach and be cleared in our bank account by this date to be eligible for the discount, regrettably there can be no exceptions if payments are delayed.

If a student is sponsored by a third party (for example – your employer, company or a government agency) you must provide documentary evidence (eg. a letter of sponsorship printed on headed paper) from an approved employer/sponsor which acknowledges that tuition fees and other associated fees will be paid on receipt of a Manchester Metropolitan University invoice.

How to apply for a tuition fee deposit refund

Students must submit a written request for a refund – a letter is preferable, but MMU Finance Office will also accept an email to tuitionfeeenq@mmu.ac.uk. You will have to provide proof of why you are unable to attend the course (for example, visa refusal).

It can take up to four weeks for a refund to be processed, although we hope to do this much sooner. The Finance Office have to refund payments to the same account from which they originated, so with online payments they are able to refund directly back to the card (including recurring card payments). If the original payment was by cheque, they would ask you provide your bank details (account number and sort code) on the written communication.

Please note that for tuition fee deposit refunds, a non-refundable administration fee will be deducted (£200 for Visa refusals and £350 for all other reasons).
