Before You Depart

We would like to provide you with some advice before you plan to depart so that you will have less to worry about when you arrive at your overseas destination.

  • Notify your LEA that you will be going on an Erasmus exchange well in advance of your travel so that you can sort out any necessary paperwork for your student loans
  • Check that your Programmes Office are well aware that you are going on an Erasmus study placement as they may need to change your status on the student records system
  • Check that you have received your offer of a place at the overseas institution, secured accommodation, arranged arrival and orientation scheme (if offered). We suggest you get in touch with your Erasmus coordinator overseas to ensure everything is in place
  • Make sure that you have adequate travel insurance, and an EHIC (formerly E111)
  • ISIC (International Student Identity Cards) are widely recognised as ID and for obtaining student discounts which may be useful when travelling the EU. Available from STA Travel
  • Speak with your bank about withdrawing money abroad – some impose a charge. Online banking is also useful when managing your account from overseas
  • If you are taking your mobile phone, check with your provider that you can use it in the host country. Some offer add -on packages to allow you to make cheaper calls back home
  • Ensure that you have researched the overseas University in detail including costs of accommodation, travel and costs of living and plan a budget so that you won't face any financial difficulties during your time overseas

Tips from former Erasmus exchange students

‘take some passport sized photographs with you as you may need these to enrol and receive your ID card’
‘Make copies of everything before you send things as the postal system isn’t always reliable or secure’
‘speak to students who have previously been on Erasmus – they know more about what you should expect, finding accommodation, what to avoid.’
‘I would definitely recommend the orientation programme’
‘Do a lot of research before you travel and contact the host institution for information and about your registration’
‘Don’t rely on the Erasmus funding to cover everything. Make sure you have plenty of money especially at the start of the exchange just in case the Erasmus funding isn’t available before you go’
