Exchanges outside Europe

We have exchange agreements with many institutions around the world. See the full list of partners (PDF, 19KB).

Worldwide exchanges last between three months and one academic year depending on subject. Not all courses are eligible for these exchanges, so the first thing to do is to check this with your own university department or faculty office.

If you’re an MMU student
wanting to study overseas…

MMU students have travelled to some exciting destinations, including New York, Sydney and Tokyo, where they've broadened their studies and horizons!

To apply

If you think you would like to apply for exchange then in the first instance you would need to check with your MMU department if this is possible as it is not possible with all courses.

It's also a good idea to make sure you have the money to pay for your programme, including accommodation, flights and living expenses as there is no funding available from the University to assist you with your period abroad.

The exchange experience

Laura Pottinger and Philippa Barnett are BA Hons students in Textiles at MMU. They recently took part in an exchange programme with Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Here's what they had to say.

‘The exchange programme was an amazing, life changing experience! Living as students in Hong Kong was extremely enjoyable and there were many highlights, from Hong Kong Fashion Week to simply watching the sun rise over the harbour!

Hong Kong itself is a great hub to the rest of South East Asia and we travelled to Cambodia, Thailand, Korea, China and Vietnam. The entire exchange is something we’ll never forget and we'd recommend it to anyone looking for new experiences!’

If you'd like to study at MMU…

MMU is a great choice for an exchange programme if you're looking for high quality education and a good base from which to see the UK.

Our modern campuses in Manchester city centre and nearby rural Cheshire offer fantastic facilities and a friendly student community.

Thanks to our central location you can reach London, Bristol, Edinburgh, Newcastle and most other major cities easily, by road, air or rail.

Manchester International Airport meanwhile serves many European destinations. Paris, Amsterdam, Rome and Madrid are only a couple of hours away.

With over 2,200 full-time international students, we're also well set up at MMU to welcome overseas visitors. We’ll make sure you have an enjoyable stay!

To apply

As a first step contact the exchange co-ordinator at your home institution. They’ll know more about our programmes and will contact us on your behalf.

All students hoping to submit an application MUST apply through their home University’s study abroad office.

Before applying you’ll need to decide how long you'd like to study at MMU. It's also a good idea to make sure you have the money to pay for your programme, including accommodation, flights and living expenses.

The MMU experience

Jason Faulkner from East Carolina University recently spent three months at MMU and these were his impressions…

‘I believe I have learned more about myself, other people and different places during the past 5 months than at any other time in my life. Having the chance to see things most people only see through pictures or textbooks is worth any amount of money. Having completed my exchange, I really feel that I can work my way through any problem, obstacle, or ‘curve’ life throws at me.

One of the highlights of my exchange period was the time I spent travelling! Why sit around when you can spend your time seeing and doing things. Make use of every minute, get out and about, even if you just walk down the street into a café, or bar – but do something! That does not mean you study less, but make sure you see everything in the ‘home’ city, and the places around. You are in a different place, seeing different sights, meeting new people - waking up in a different environment - that is a highlight in itself.

Spend time with the students at your host University. One of many highlights I had was just talking and finding out about them. Studying abroad will help you learn about other people – and about yourself.

Thank you, everyone in MMU International. I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed my experience and how grateful I am for being a part of it.’
