Climate and Clothing for the UK

The climate in the UK may be very different from your home country, so it's important to prepare for your arrival.

The average day-time temperatures in the North West of England are:-

  • Summer - 19 ºC
  • Winter - 5 ºC

Hours of daylight can vary from 8.30am to 4.00pm in midwinter; and 4.00am to 10.30pm in midsummer.

We have quite a lot of rainfall all year round and you'll need to dress warmly in the winter. A warm, water-proof coat, a sturdy umbrella and good shoes are essential.

There's no charge for heating or light in University Halls of Residence, but if you take private accommodation, you may need to keep an eye on your heating bills, especially if this is not included in your rent.

It's worth adding extra blankets or investing in a thick duvet to your bed in winter, and wearing warm clothing indoors so you can reduce your heating. This will help reduce your bills.
