Living in the UK

In this section we’ll tell you a little about the UK, its customs, its people and its laws.

Some of this may be different to the way things are done in your own country, but our international students soon settle in.

Here are a few things to know straight away:

  • British people are generally relaxed and polite, although they’re also quite reserved. This doesn't mean they’re unfriendly!
  • If you’re going to be late for a meeting call the person and let them know.
  • If you’re invited to someone’s home for a meal, it’s customary to take a small gift – or you could invite them to your home in return.
  • It’s a good idea to bring photos of your country, as people will be interested.
  • If you’re invited to a pub but don't drink alcohol, don’t worry. Pubs sell non-alcoholic drinks.
  • Both men and women aged 18 or over are allowed into pubs. There’s no waiter service and you normally pay for drinks when you order them.
  • People in the UK always form polite queues.
