Facts and Figures about MMU

19th century picture of the Manchester School of ArtOur history dates back 150 years but our focus is firmly on the future. It’s this mix of the traditional and the contemporary that sets Manchester Metropolitan University apart and gives us our distinctive character. The University has an enviable reputation for providing work-ready graduates with a mix of thinking, problem-solving and practical skills that employers in industry, commerce and the professions want. Some 92% of our graduates go straight into work or further study within six months of graduation.

The University has more than 34,000 students. Our central campus is to the South of Manchester’s city centre close to The University of Manchester and the Royal Northern College of Music. This complex makes up the largest university campus in Western Europe. There are a further four campuses in other parts of the city, and one at Crewe and Alsager in Cheshire.

MMU is currently organised into eight faculties:

MMU’s ambitious vision for the future – known as the change agenda – is to strengthen the student experience with emphasis on high-quality teaching and course provision. A £300 million investment programme is now under way that will produce the largest physical change to the University’s estate since its foundation. The consolidation from seven to two sites will bring huge benefits in terms of academic and research collaboration and opportunities for interdisciplinary work and courses as we invest in our future as The University for World-Class Professionals.

Research & Academic Excellence

research imageMMU prides itself on conducting world-class, relevant research which informs curriculum developments, shapes business and professional practice and influences policy-making, both nationally and internationally.

The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), rating MMU’s 17 research areas, found all of them to be producing work of international excellence, with 12 of them rated as world class.

We are ranked fourth among research-active new universities in attracting support from the Higher Education Funding Council for England.

Our education research is now in the top 10 in the country, as well as areas of world leading research in health, biomedical sciences, computer science, business & management, social work & social policy, drama, dance & performing arts.
