MANCHESTER Metropolitan University this year honours eight outstanding individuals during Graduation Week.
The 2011 Honorands are men and women who have made major contributions to the academic work of the University or who have earned distinction for their contribution to education, business, culture, creative work or public service.
We honour:
Lord Carlile of Berriew QC, barrister and member of the House of Lords, for his distinguished achievements in the fields of law, politics and social reform and the inspiration he represents for students and graduates of Manchester Metropolitan University – Honorary Doctorate of Laws.
Dr Ann Limb OBE DL, educationalist, business leader and charity entrepreneur, for her distinguished achievements in the fields of business and leadership education and her inspirational work for charities – Honorary Doctorate of Education.
Mr Ross Brawn OBE, motorsport engineer and Formula One team principal, for his outstanding achievements in Formula1 and automotive engineering and the inspiration he represents for young and upcoming engineers - Honorary Degree of Doctorate of Engineering.
Mr Henri Strzelecki MBE, fashion designer and founder of Henri-Lloyd, for his outstanding contribution to the fields of clothing technology and manufacturing. The Henri-Lloyd brand is an inspiration to our students and his support of the University is greatly valued - Honorary Degree of Doctorate of Technology.
Professor Derek Bell, scientist and educationalist for his outstanding contribution to science education and his generous commitment to the development of the University’s Science Learning Centre North West - Honorary Degree of Doctor of Education.
Professor Alan Gilbert (posthumous) former president and vice-chancellor of the University of Manchester for his outstanding contribution to education and his distinguished leadership of the University of Manchester - Honorary Doctorate of Education.
Mr Peter Marks, chief executive of The Co-operative Group, for his distinguished achievements in business and his outstanding commitment to ethical and sustainable practices. His continued encouragement and support of the University provides invaluable opportunities for staff, students and graduates - Honorary Doctorate of Business Administration.
Dr Ruth Hussey OBE, regional director of public health, NHS North West, for her outstanding contribution to public health and the inspiration she represents to our upcoming health professionals - Honorary Doctorate of Health.
Honorands receive their awards at the Bridgewater Hall from July 18 – 23.
