Graduate entrepreneurs get inspired at Media City

Universities come together to host enterprise event

FOR the first time ever the Manchester Metropolitan University, the University of Salford, and the University of Manchester came together to host an innovative enterprise conference for postgraduate students.

The event at Media City UK was part funded by the European Regional Development Fund as part of the NW HE Enterprise Champions project.

The conference was built around 3 themes – inspiration, collaboration and opportunity and was conceived to inspire postgraduate students to gain enterprise knowledge, skills and experience to enable them to be enterprising researchers and have enterprising careers.

Attendees were encouraged to collaborate to build towards a real business idea pitched to a range of invited guests.

Industry figures

Key figures from industry within the North West supported the oversubscribed conference including recruitment and training professional Janet Taylor and consultant Kirsty Craig who acted as mentors to over 100 students throughout the formation of their business ideas.

A range of specialist workshops were delivered by industry professionals including Dan Sodegren and David Bozward. The PR session run by Mary Murtagh was so popular that MMU have invited her back to run a masterclass on 22nd February.

MMU’s part in the conference was led by the Enterprise Champions team of Laura Rimmer, Ann Mulhaney, Clare Schofield and Claire Giddens.

Since 2008 the team have helped over 1000 students develop their enterprising ability, encouraged the start up of over 70 businesses and delivered 2000 hours of enterprise learning.

The team have achieved this by developing a range of bespoke programmes for groups and individual graduates. The full suite of available activities can be found here including details of the highly successful New Directions course that will be running again on 6th & 7th June.
