Meningitis can develop suddenly and progress rapidly so it is best to catch it as soon as possible. With early diagnosis and antibiotic treatment, most people with meningococcal disease will make a full recovery. But, the disease can be fatal and can lead to long-term health problems.

Make sure that you are aware of the signs and symptoms, and do not wait for a rash to develop before seeking medical attention.
Trust your instincts. If you are feeling unwell or are concerned, seek urgent medical help. The NHS operates a telephone advice service – call NHS 111 service, which is free of charge from any phone – contact your local GP, or go to a walk in centre.
