The project aims to identify consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic for children in the youth justice system and share the lessons learned.
Researchers want to understand the unprecedented implications of the pandemic for justice-involved children. A better understanding of the effects of COVID-19 on the youth justice system will help shape future policy and practice.
The research team is exploring the impact of the pandemic on youth courts, youth offending services and the youth secure estate, including the effects of remote working and trial delays.
Researchers will survey and interview youth justice professionals, and work with children who have experience of the justice system.
Findings will be shared with youth justice professionals, policymakers, government ministers, members of parliament and other parliamentarians through a series of regional and national events, policy briefings and research reports.
