Developing your research career

Our Research strategy has been designed to create an environment and culture that will be recognised across the sector as constituting a great place to develop your research career. We have a variety of training opportunities, resources and expertise available to support researchers, including two key programmes designed to support the development of research leadership expertise.

Future RKE Leaders supports those taking their first steps into research independence. Good to Great supports those who have demonstrated exceptional potential to move from research independence to academic leadership.

Our environment and culture is further enhanced by a strong coaching and mentoring ethos, with support and training to develop a coaching management style and opportunity to take part in research mentoring programmes.

The Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers

Researcher career development at Manchester Met is strongly underpinned by our commitment to the principles of the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers. This Concordat is an agreement between researchers, their managers, their institution and their funders to improve employment and career development support for researchers in the UK. The Concordat details responsibilities for each of these groups covering core principles of Environment and Culture, Employment and Professional and Career Development.

It guarantees that our researchers are given structured support to further their careers through professional development and periodic reviews. It also ensures engagement with our research community, providing opportunities to access training and careers advice.

The Concordat to Support Research Integrity

The Concordat to Support Research Integrity sets out a national standard for conduct and governance. In line with this, the University upholds the highest standards of rigour and integrity for all of its research. That includes honesty, transparency, respect and accountability.

Part of our ethos behind following the Concordat is a duty to our research community. We have reflected its aims into the University’s governance structures in order to provide more focused support.

Through our continued commitment to the scheme, we have established a supportive and collaborative environment for all our researchers.

EU HR excellence in research

The HR Excellence in Research Award recognises commitment to principles of the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers. Manchester Met first secured this award in 2013.

We have been working to maintain this standard through independent analysis of our actions, achievements and forward-action plans every two years. In 2020 we became a signatory of the revised Researcher Development Concordat, demonstrated by a commitment from our Vice Chancellor.

The development of our Concordat action plan is managed and monitored by a cross-institutional oversight group of staff from the Research & Innovation Directorate and Human Resources plus researcher representatives, including Early Career Researchers and Postgraduate Students. This group reports into the University’s Research & Innovation Committee that includes strategic oversight of compliance with the Concordat as part of its terms of reference.
