Each year the University recognises the contribution made by individuals of distinction through the conferment of an honorary award which both honours the individual and at the same time raises the profile of the University. Details of previous honorands are available from the Honorary Graduates page.
Honorary Awards will be granted to individuals of national or international distinction who:
Honorary Awards will be conferred on a faculty basis and each faculty will, through its Dean, arrange for the nomination of an appropriate person who would be clearly associated with their work and values. This is an important opportunity for faculties to create an association with well-known individuals with a high public profile in relevant fields and to raise the profile of key areas of the University’s teaching, research and enterprise.
Honorands will receive their awards at individual faculty student award ceremonies and will be requested to make a response, which would be a central feature of the ceremony concerned. In addition, the presence of high profile Honorands at degree ceremonies adds to students’ and their families’ enjoyment of the day.
Any member of staff of the University, any student member of the University or any member of its Board of Governors may nominate another person for an honorary Degree, but nominations in respect of a current member of staff or the student body shall not be considered. Members of the public may also submit nominations which may be considered at the discretion of the Vice-Chancellor.
A call for nominations will be issued in the autumn term and will be considered by the Academic Board’s Honorary Awards Committee. For 2012 awards, nominations should be forwarded to the Marketing & Communications Office, by no later than 14 October 2011.
