P&MI - MMUniview
MMUniview, the sector-leading management information system which reports on data drawn from the student record system and other academic records to provide a single academic view of the Institution, was developed by the Planning and Management Information team and officially launched on 22 January 2009.
Including the best features of previous systems and 13 years of core trend data and statistics, the system is as ‘intuitive’ as possible. Statistics can be extracted by a mouse click while ‘hot topics’ such as enrolments, retention, wastage and withdrawal rates can be explored in depth. New features include ‘traffic lights’ which provide a visual guide to the health of particular performance indicators.
The recommended approach is to start big and drill down. Course leaders checking retention rates across all faculties will find critical figures appearing in red while those in amber will indicate potential problem areas – they can then drill down to see how a specific faculty, department or course is performing.
Staff can also access the good honours outcomes of students – overall they’re 56.2% (slightly below sector level) and it’s possible to identify the numbers at individual course level.
In-built filters allow users to be selective: the current state of applications can be checked and, by combining filters, the statistics can be specific to full-time, postgraduate or sandwich courses. Current applications can be checked against enrolment targets for the relevant year.
Uniview is a very powerful tool. It already monitors a number of the 31 current institutional objectives, such as the need to improve postgraduate recruitment, student retention and good honours outcomes, while the traffic lights show how we are measuring up.
For example, the retention rate for all first year full-time students on first degrees (which form 50% of all MMU first year activity) is 81%, putting us in the bottom half in the sector for retention – hence the need to identify those courses contributing significantly to that position.
Uniview is a ‘forensic tool’ that allows colleagues to understand and to intervene, if necessary, in the way we deal with students to deliver corporate objectives.
Access to Uniview is by licence only and 600 staff are already on the official list, which is an indication of the strong support the Executive has given to the development and a recognition of its importance.
