Step up to Study

Our Step up to Study courses are designed to help you build on your previous educational experience in the context of studying at university. You will have an opportunity to explore topics like practical tips for social and financial wellbeing, introduction to exploring academic voice, plus concepts like imposter syndrome, growth mindset.

  • Introduction to Studying in Higher Education: the differences and similarities

    Learn more about the learning environment at university compared to prior learning environments like college. Offering some top tips and including student voice throughout, it will help you understand how you will be taught at university.

  • Practical Tips and Wellbeing in Higher Education: what to do to help you  prepare

    Explore practical tips for outside of your study to help you make the most of your time at university. From focussing on finance to social life, to your own self-care.

    Look at the way we question and write at university, and explore the need to understand authorship, interpret data and make the most of your word: it starts with you finding your academic voice.

  • Exploring academic and study skills in a social context  

    Explores topics such as the wider purpose of higher education, impostor syndrome, celebrating diversity in the higher education community, and the importance of a growth mindset.

    The learning activities for each of these topics will give you a taste of the type of studying that you might undertake at university, including listening to, reading, questioning and responding to different types of sources. It will also provide space to reflect on your skills development, and how these topics connect to you.

    Explore spaces and opportunities available beyond your course, and get to know and get involved with different communities, not only at programme level, but also across and outside the university. The course will also provide you with the tools to start planning your future, so that you can make the most of your time at university.

Getting Ready to Learn

If you are looking to get back into the studying mindset after your summer break, these Getting Ready to Learn workshops have been designed to prepare you for the start of term!

You can find our workshops on the Getting Ready to Learn Moodle page and our own Academic and Study Skills Moodle area. You can also earn Rise points when you complete any of our workshops.

A Critical Thought Podcast
