Pyrus Trust Bursary

The Pyrus Trust is a small charity which makes grants to children and adults who are, or who have been, in care and are taking a course in the creative arts.

The Trust has set up a bursary scheme at three English Universities. We are pleased to announce that in recognition of Manchester Met University's established and increasing engagement with Care Leavers and with Widening Participation generally the Trust have chosen MMU.

The scheme is being extended this year to students on any undergraduate course, although priority will be given to those studying the creative arts.

What is the Pyrus Trust Bursary?

The bursary is a one off non repayable award of £350.

Applications are being invited from final year undergraduates studying any undergraduate course at MMU.

If there are more applicants than bursaries available, priority will be given firstly to those studying one of the creative arts courses at the University and secondly on the basis of relative financial need, with priority being given to those not receiving a Local Authority Care Leaver’s Higher Education Grant.

You may wish to keep private the fact that you have been in care. For this reason, only those members of staff directly involved in administering the bursary will need to know that you have made an application. Your tutors and other academic staff will not need to be informed.

Am I eligible to apply?

If you are a care leaver and a final year undergraduate on any undergraduate course you are eligible to apply.

By 'care leaver' we mean anyone who has been in local authority care, and has, for example, lived in foster care or in a children’s home for any length of time and at any point in their life. You may have come straight to University from care or you may have left care some years ago.

However, if you were successfully and permanently adopted you will not be eligible.

There are no age restrictions to applicants and once you have received the bursary we will not ask you to account for the way in which you spend the money.

You can also download an application form from here.

If you would like to discuss the details of the bursary in confidence, including whether you are eligible, please contact Peter Riley, on Telephone: 0161 247 1967 or email:
