Talking to visitors from last year, we realised that we have some hints and tips to help you make the most of your Open Day visits.
Our making the most of MMU Open Days slideshow includes pointers on planning your day, what to do when you get here and taking care of yourself on the day.
Make sure that you book a place – this way we can send you an MMU Open Day guide two weeks in advance. Planning and prioritising the things that you are most interested in will help you make the most of the day.
Arrange your travel plans in good time. Car parking is not available on all sites and often public transport can be quicker, less stressful and is more environmentally friendly.
Keep to your schedule. There will be lots to see and do, but you need to make sure that you reach the information points, talks and tours that will most benefit your decision making process.
Evaluate the location and atmosphere of the campus you are visiting when you get there. Is it sufficiently close to/far enough away from home? Would you like to be there for 3 years?
Think about questions you want to ask about your subject area before you visit, e.g. Will the assessment method suit you? What do graduates from the course typically do after they graduate? How big are lectures and seminar groups?
Help yourself to University information. It’s sometimes reassuring to read through course leaflets, sports and societies’ brochures and finance information on your way home – and they often contain useful weblinks.
Ensure that you get a ticket for a campus tour. MMU offers well-organised, comprehensive tours of the campuses including facilities, local surroundings, and halls.
Make sure you talk to MMU students on the day. Do you want to know about how many hours a week you will attend lectures? Or more about making friends at MMU?
Organise to visit with friends if you can – this way you will have some company on the way, maybe get a lift and can compare notes, but make sure that you don’t just tag along with their plans and what they’re interested in – it’s your future that you should be interested in.
Speak to the Students’ Union and find out how you can be involved. Representing students on the Student Council, being active in a club or society or writing for the University magazine, Pulp, could put the sparkle on your CV that employers are looking for.
Take the time to visit our Student Finance stand. We have up-to date information available and staff trained to point you the right direction and make sure you do everything you can to put yourself in the best position to start university.
Order a coffee or something to eat at one of the cafés on/ around campus. It’s one of the best ways to experience the atmosphere on campus.
Find out about volunteering opportunities at Communi and how you can get involved the local community.
Manage a visit to a MMU library on campus. MMU has over 850,000 books, 8500 journals and many specialist publications which could help your studies.
Make notes and take pictures on your phone if you want to – it might help you to remember the facilities more accurately later.
Use the break in between talks and tours to take a walk around the campus grounds or nearby parks to get some fresh air.
Open minds come in very handy at Open Days. It’s possible that the course you had in mind doesn’t suit you, but have a look round, there could be interesting alternatives.
Protect your personal belongings by keeping bags and accessories close by. And make sure you know where your friends and parents are in case you need them.
Enjoy the event – you might meet new people who are thinking about applying for the same course as you!
Never cut your visit shortIf you’ve still got time to visit another campus or view more facilities – it will be worth the effort!
Do go on a University halls tour if you are interested in accommodation at MMU. There will be students who actually live in the halls who you can ask questions as you go round.
Aim to take down the names of tutors and staff you have spoken to in case you need to get in touch with any questions later on.
Your checklist could be handy at this point – make sure that you’ve done everything you set out to do.
Start your journey home in timeif you’re booked on a train or bus, don’t miss it, keep to your route and stay safe.
