Events in Cheshire
In Crewe and Nantwich, big events are a little hard to come by unless it's summertime - which is understandable because no one really enjoys standing outside in the freezing cold do they?!
In summer though, the two towns come alive with events but the biggest by far is the Crewe Carnival. Although it's an alcohol free zone (and this isn't necessarily a bad thing - you can give your hard working livers a break!) there's plenty to be done.
Held in Queens Park in Crewe, the Carnival has floats, fairs and even the local radio stations come along to join in the fun. The Carnival falls over the August bank holiday weekend, and on the Monday there's usually plenty of live music, with both local and well-known bands coming to play. If Carnivals aren't really your thing though, you can take a blanket and a picnic and lie in the sun and just listen to the music.
Crewe and Nantwich both hold farmers' markets. The farmers' markets in Nantwich fall on every last Saturday of each month, except for December. Although the produce is not always cheaper than supermarkets (often similar prices) the goods are much better quality, much fresher and travel shorter distances (by several hundreds of miles!) so this means that not only are you supporting the ailing agricultural industry, but also helping to protect the environment - and no one really has an excuse for not doing that!
You can get all sorts of produce at the farmers markets, but it does depend on the season. Some of the goods you will often find includes apples, herbs, butter and cheese, meat, potatoes, eggs, jams, beers, biscuits, plenty of fruit and veg, and lots of homemade cakes and bread!
If music is more your scene, Nantwich hosts their annual jazz and blues music festival.
This year sees the 10th anniversary of this festival, and if last year is anything to go by, it'll be another sell out concert! This year the festival runs from Thursday 13th to Monday 17th April and details can be found at http://www.nantwichjazz.com/index.htm.
If you're not a big jazz fan, then you may not have heard of many of the bands that are lined up to play but don't let this put you off. An open mind to music never hurt anyone and jazz is music that is played with passion and love, and not just some good looking schoolboys with floppy hair looking to make a few millions!
There any many more events that run in Crewe, Alsager and Nantwich, but some do take you further afield. Look out for up and coming events on Cheshire's events and festivals pages.
And lastly, don't forget to check out the Beer Festival in Macclesfield. It will be held at the Macclesfield Rugby Club on the 6th and 7th of May. It's a great opportunity to try beers from all over the world, a perfect outing for you and your mates.
