How to Survive a University Library

Starting university can seem daunting with so many new things to take in, and walking into a university library for the first time can feel just as intimidating. You might feel overwhelmed by all the computers you see, or even just by the size of the building. You might feel intimidated by how busy the library seems, or even by how quiet and serious it appears at other times.

Don't feel daunted. Getting to know how to use a library is an important part of being a student. It's where you can get hold of all the information you need to get on with an essay or presentation or any other assignment you may have to do as a student. It's also very straightforward, and there are plenty of people who want to help you get to know your library.
Here are some simple tips on how to get the most out of your library.
arrow There are 7 MMU Libraries altogether. Each one of them has books, newspapers, journals and much much more on different subjects that students study. When you start your course you will find out which library or libraries are best for your subject area
arrow Library staff are here to help you . If you need any support in finding information do ask at one of the Help Desks you'll find in each Library
arrow Don't forget that the Library isn't just about books . There are many different ways to get hold of information, from reading a magazine (also known as journals) to watching a DVD or video
arrow You can find out if we have a book or video or any other kind of information on a particular subject by searching our easy to use Library Catalogue
arrow The Internet can be a great place to find information. But this information could be out of date or inaccurate. We recommend that you get to know the Library Website and don't rely on Google! You can access the Library Website from work, home, University, public library, or cyber café - anywhere that has a computer with internet access. Here's the address you'll need: http://www.mmu.ac.uk/library
