Register with a doctor & dentist.

Register with a Doctor & Dentist

It is important to register with a local GP when you arrive at University. If you need advice or treatment in the future, it is much easier if you are already registered and can save you stress and valuable time.

To find a doctor, dentist, optician or pharmacy close to your campus or accommodation go to the NHS website and enter your postcode.

    NHS Direct operates a 24-hour health advice and information service on 0845 4647 (Textphone 0845 606 4647)

Free prescriptions, dental treatments or opticians appointments are available to students aged 19 and over, however you need to complete a HC1 Form to be eligible. You can pick up a HC1 form from the Students' Union.

Insure your property if it’s not already covered.

    Insurance

If you live in University owned Halls of Residence, you are covered by a block policy which provides insurance for personal possessions against various risks, including theft from University buildings. Details of the cover are available from Hall Wardens or through the Accommodation Office.

If you are living in private accommodation, you must take out adequate insurance which might be an extension of your family’s household contents policy.

You should check that you have adequate cover to suit your circumstances and you are strongly advised to take out insurance (or additional insurance) as necessary.

Confirm you are exempt from paying Council Tax.

    Council Tax

Council Tax depends on the status of the occupants of a property. Full-time students may be exempt from Council Tax.

If you live in Halls of Residence, you don’t have to pay Council Tax. If you live on your own, or everyone in your home is a student, you may not have to pay Council Tax. You may also be able to claim a discount or Council Tax Rebate, depending on your circumstances.
