What to do before you arrive

  • [ ]

Return your photograph letter with a passport photo attached.

This will be used for your Student ID card.

    MMU Student ID cards

Collecting your MMU student ID card completes your enrolment with the University and will allow you to access the Library and other University buildings and facilities, including Halls of Residence – so it’s important that you keep it safe throughout your time at MMU!  If you have applied for a Maintenance Loan from the Student Loans Company (SLC) you will not receive a payment until you have collected your student ID card.

For details of when and where to collect your card, please visit www.mmu.ac.uk/enrol/cardcollection or contact your nearest Student Information Point or Student Life Office.

If you should lose your card you can get a replacement from your nearest Student Information Point or Student Life Office.

Log-in to your new student email account.

MMU email account and Network username

As soon as you become eligible to enrol we will add you to the MMU network and set up an MMU email account for you.  You can access your email account at www.mmu.ac.uk/students – by clicking ‘Log in to your student email’.

To log in to your MMU email account you will need your ID and password. Your ID is your MMU network ID (usually an eight-digit number) followed by @stu.mmu.ac.uk (for example, 12345678@stu.mmu.ac.uk)

The first time you log in to your account your password will be your date of birth in the format ddMmmyy (for example, if your date of birth is 12 September 1992 your password will be 12Sep92). The first letter of the month must be entered as a capital, the other two in lower case.

If you are unsure of your MMU network ID or have forgotten your password please contact our Enrolment Team on 0161 247 5959.

You should check your MMU email account regularly for important messages, as it is one of the primary methods the University will use to communicate with you.

Apply for a student loan or tuition fee loan if you wish to take them out.

Applying For Student Loans and Grants

If you have applied for student financial support you probably don’t need to read the following information. If you are a late applicant to university and have not started this process yet, here’s what you need to do:

    1. Go to www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance and complete the PN1 form online. It is quicker and easier to apply online as you can track the progress of your application. Your parents or partner (if relevant) can support your application by supplying their information online too
    2. If you prefer you can still apply on paper, just download the PN1 form and notes from www.direct.gov/studentfinance Gather all of the necessary information and complete the PN1 form. Do this as soon as possible – the later you apply, the longer you will wait for any support you are entitled to
    3. If you take out a student loan for tuition fees or living costs make sure you provide your national insurance number or your loan instalments may not be paid
    4. Use the calculator on the student finance website to estimate financial support you are likely to receive
    5. Download a copy of the MMU Student Finance booklet and use it to plan how you will manage your finances
    6. Work out how you will manage for the first few weeks of term – you may have to wait several weeks before you receive your first loan payment

    Contacting the Student Loans Company

As this is the busiest time of year for the Student Loans Company, it may take longer than normal to get through by phone. To access their web services and to get the latest updates, especially if you are new to MMU or have come through Clearing or are making a late loan application, visit our student financial support unit website.

    Did you know…

A student bank account with any of the main banks will offer you a free overdraft facility – check terms and conditions of accounts for overdraft rates AFTER graduation, as these may vary.

At MMU you can pay your fees up front or in instalments.

Your local Student Finance Authority (England / Northern Ireland / Wales or the Student Awards Agency for Scotland) will calculate any Bursary you may be entitled to from the information on your PN1 form on behalf of MMU – so long as you (or your parents) haven’t ticked the "don’t share my information" box.

  • [ ]

Decide how you will pay your tuition fees and, if applicable, your accommodation fees.

  • [ ]

Check what living costs you will need to budget for - accommodation, transport, books / equipment, food, entertainment, clothes etc.

  • [ ]

Find out how you’re going to get to University There are lots of public transport options, and limited car parking. Find out more at the student travel website.

  • [ ]

    Open a student bank account.

  • [ ]

Check whether your possessions will be covered by an insurance policy.

    Insurance

If you live in University owned Halls of Residence, you are covered by a block policy which provides insurance for personal possessions against various risks, including theft from University buildings. Details of the cover are available from Hall Wardens or through the Accommodation office.

If you are living in private accommodation, you must take out adequate insurance which might be an extension of your family’s household contents policy.

You should check that you have adequate cover to suit your particular circumstances and you are strongly advised to take out such insurance (or additional insurance) as you consider necessary.

Advise the University of any extra support or special requirements you may have by contacting Learning Development.

    Learner Development (Disabled Students)

The Learner Development Service provides information, advice and support to disabled students with Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLDs), e.g. dyslexia. If you have a SpLD, health condition or mental health difficulty, you may be considered to be a disabled person. If you think you may have dyslexia but aren’t sure, let us know and we’ll advise you what to do.

Contact us to discuss any of these things confidentially and we’ll let you know what help (including financial support) may be available to support you in your learning.

Don’t delay! Contact us before term starts. The earlier we see you the quicker any support can be put in place.
Learner Development can also provide you with a Study Support Guide, as well as referring you to your Faculty Student Support Officer for one-to-one and group study skills support.
