I am a careers professional who has moved into an academic career combining research and lecturing. My professional life has included extensive advice and guidance, teaching and management in higher education (Universities of Manchester and Salford), having originally qualified and practised in the secondary/further education sector. In my research life I completed my part-time PhD in Educational Research (Higher Education) with Lancaster University in 2018. My focus was on graduate transitions, careers and employability. My research and teaching are in the areas of employablility, career development, higher education, work, employment and young people..
At Man Met Uni, I lead in my department on Employability, Personal Tutoring and Graduate Outcomes.
I am a researcher in the Research Centre for Decent Work and Productivity.
Director of Research and Knowledge for the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS) (2018-22).
I am a member of the Policy and Research Steering Group of the Institute of Student Employers (ISE).
I am a member of the Sector Network for the Centre for Transforming Access and Student Outcomes’ (TASO).
I am on the Editorial Board of the Journal of the National Institute of Career Education and Counselling
I am on the Editorial Board of the Career Guidance for Social Justice blog.
I am a regular reviewer for various academic journals.
I am a Fellow of the National Institute of Career Education and Counselling (NICEC).
I am a Convenor for the Employability, Enterprise and Work-based Learning Network of the Society of Research in Higher Education (SRHE).
I am a member of the British Sociological Association (BSA).
I am a Fellow of the RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce).

I welcome new PhD students, especially in career development and employability.
I have also acted as an external examiner for doctoral theses at the Universities of Durham, Liverpool and Reading.
My research interests include career studies, career development, education, employability, higher education, inequalities, social justice, social learning theories, work and young people.
