Environmental Management System

Our Environmental Management System (EMS) gives us a structured framework for managing and minimising the impact of our operations on the environment.

The Environmental Management System is implemented by using the phased approach of the EcoCampus scheme, which provides a structured approach to work towards the ISO14001:2015 standard. In 2016, Manchester Met were the first University to achieve the new and more challenging ISO14001:2015 standard.

Our EMS incorporates all of the University's business activities, including our estates and operations, leadership and governance, learning, teaching and research and engagement activities.

Policy and Strategy

We have set some ambitious targets and outlined the key steps the University must take in order to become one of the most environmentally in the world.

Our Environmental Sustainability policy and strategy form part of our EMS framework, setting out our strategic aims, objectives, targets and key performance indicators.

Environmental Sustainability Policy

Our Environmental Sustainability Policy sets out our key commitments, and provides a framework for establishing our environmental aims, objectives and targets.

It's vital that staff, students, Trade Union representatives have the opportunity to engage in the development and on-going review of our policies, strategies and management plans. If you would like to comment or give feedback, or be involved in the development of our policies and plans, please contact the Environment Team.

Supporting the aims of Greater Manchester

We have pledged to work towards a shared vision of eradicating avoidable single-use plastics from catering, labs and stationery with other Greater Manchester Universities, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and Further Education Colleges by 2022. This is part of a wider commitment to lead the way on sustainability and achieve carbon neutral campuses across Greater Manchester by 2038.
