The University’s governance structure for environmental issues are detailed below. The Boards and working groups ensure environmental issues are managed effectively and that the university continually improves its environmental performance.

Estate Strategy Group

To advise the University Executive Group (UEG) on the Estate Strategy, the associated Estate Masterplan, progress of the Masterplan Major Projects and other estate developments. The Group will also advise UEG on the strategic direction for the Environmental Sustainability Strategy and its implementation and will ensure that the University remains compliant with environmental legislation.

Terms of Reference
1. To advise the UEG on the University’s Estate Strategy and Estate Masterplan, taking into account the overall strategic direction of the University and linkage to environmental sustainability.
2. To monitor progress against the targets and KPIs set out in the Estate Strategy and Estate Masterplan.
3. To advise UEG on the acquisition, disposal and best use of land and accommodation for the purposes of the University.
4. To ensure that the University’s capital project commitments are in line with the University’s financial plans and ensure adequate resource are deployed across the approved projects.
5. To keep the Masterplan investment priorities under review and receive Project Executive updates.
6. To monitor the progress and performance of the Environmental Sustainability Strategy and implementation of Environmental Management System (ISO14001).
7. To review new policies, procedures and business cases in support of the Environmental Sustainability Strategy, before consultation and submission to University Executive Group for approval.

Fairtrade Steering Group

The group seeks to develop, co-ordinate and oversee the implementation of an action plan to maintain Fairtrade accreditation at the University and The Union.

The Groups aims include:

  • Ensure Fairtrade products are widely available and accessible across the University along with reviewing current products and prices
  • Ensure the delivery of a programme of Fairtrade activities to increase and enhance awareness across the University
  • Work with academics to incorporate Fairtrade into the curriculum across a wide range of subject areas
  • Review, monitor and report progress of implementation of the Fairtrade action plan

Environmental Management Group

The purpose of this group is to ensure the Environmental Sustainability Policy, Strategy and management system is maintained and delivered. The group will report progress to the Environmental Strategy Board highlighting performance, opportunities, challenges and risks.

Biodiversity Management Group

The purpose of this group is to strategically lead our biodiversity and growing systems management programmes in order to achieve MMU’s Environmental Policy Aims, Objectives and Targets.

Group aim:

  • To protect and enhance biodiversity across the University’s green infrastructure and promote its benefits for students, staff, visitors and the local communities.

Education for Sustainable Development Group

The purpose of the group is to co-ordinate, share and communicate activity related to ESD at Manchester Met.

Group aims include:

  • Provide a platform for members to communicate and share initiatives with the group that are taking place within their faculties/departments.
  • Provide a platform for collaboration on ESD initiatives between members.
  • Provide a focus and end point for ESD activities.
  • Explore initiatives that may potentially support MMU (staff and students) embedding ESD into the curriculum.

Waste Management Group

The purpose of this group is to strategically lead MMU’s Waste Work Programmes to achieve MMU’s Waste Policy Aims, Objectives and Targets.

Group aim:

  • To ensure the University takes a robust approach through the waste hierarchy, (Prevent, Reduce, Recycle, Disposal) and to ensure it manages both hazardous and non-hazardous wastes in accordance with legal requirements.

Water, Energy & Carbon Management Group

The purpose of this group is to strategically lead our Water, Energy and Sustainable Buildings Work Programmes to achieve MMU’s Environmental Policy Aims, Objectives and Targets, as outlined in the Environmental Strategy.

Group aims include:

Energy Management

  • Reduce operational energy consumption from the building estate to help achieve carbon emission targets
  • To reduced gas consumption in line with our carbon targets

Water Management

  • Reduce total water consumption through practical water conservation measures and reduce costs through the increased use of alternative water sources
  • Increase the deployment of sustainable drainage measures to reduce surface water runoff and flood risk.

Sustainable Buildings

  • Embed the principles of sustainable design during the development and refurbishment of the University Estate to have the lowest achievable environmental impact, both in construction and throughout occupation.
  • Provide a healthy working physical environment to support and promote the imperatives of the health and wellbeing Policy.

Local Pollution Prevention

  • Present local pollution to air, water and land through identifying the risks and implementing management control procedures

Travel & Transport Working Group

The purpose of this group is to lead our travel plans to achieve MMU’s Environmental Policy Aims, Objectives and Targets.

The group aims to minimise the impact associated with the University’s travel arrangements for staff and students and encourage the use of efficient modes of transport that minimise environmental impact, reduce congestion and air pollution.
