ICYL2021

International Conference on Youth Languages, 26-28 May 2021
on the theme of 'Youth Language and Change'

A virtual conference organised by the Manchester Centre for Youth Studies, Manchester Metropolitan University.

Change is an ever-present theme in the context of youth language. There are on-going changes in forms of communication and mobility between physical, geographical, virtual and online spaces. Youth linguistic practices are widely recognised as a vehicle and catalyst for language change. The conference aims to explore the boundaries of change and looks at the involvement of young people in current political and social movements who are 'bringing about change' through a range of linguistic and communicative means. The conference particularly welcomes presentations which embrace changes and developments in research approaches which increasingly encourage the agency of young people as co-researchers rather than simply 'passive' participants.
