Manchester School of Architecture ranked 7th in the world

QS subject league tables lists university among top 10 of best global architecture schools

Manchester School of Architecture (MSA) has been named in the top 10 of the QS World Subject Rankings 2022.

MSA, an innovative collaboration between Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester, is ranked 7th in the world and 2nd in the UK, climbing four places since last year.

The prestigious QS World University Rankings highlight the world’s top performing universities in 51 individual academic areas.

Compiled annually, the rankings are based upon academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact and help prospective students to identify leading universities in a particular subject.

Highlights from the results from MSA’s ranking criteria for this year sees the School achieving 98.7% for the Employer Reputation, the second highest in the world and first in the UK, along with strong results in Research Citations per paper and Academic Reputation.

Professor Kevin Singh, Head of Manchester School of Architecture at Manchester Metropolitan University, said: “I’m obviously thrilled the School has been recognised in this way, especially as recognition of the incredible work the staff team have done in the last year under the challenging circumstances of an ongoing pandemic.

“It’s particularly pleasing to see that our Employer Reputation ranking is at 98.7%, the second highest, which is testament to the work we’ve done building and maintaining relationships with employers, our Academic Reputation which speaks to our burgeoning relationships with institutions around the world, and our strong performance in Citations per Paper which reflects the strength of research in the School.

“The high performance across these varied areas captures the very essence of the School, one of high quality, research informed design, and of producing highly employable graduates.”

MSA unites two schools with more than 100 years’ educational experience to create one of the largest architecture schools in the UK.

MSA has gained a reputation for the variety, vitality and quality of the of work and achievement of its students. This is reflected in appraisals from the Architects’ Registration Board (ARB), Royal Institute for British Architects (RIBA) and The Landscape Institute.  

MSA has developed a strong research presence, which is underpinned by the diverse range of work produced. Research groups fall broadly into three thematic areas, Built Heritage, Urban Future and Citizen Engagement, capturing the breadth of research produced.
