Young people across England will have the opportunity to learn more about the natural world around them and to play leadership roles in studying, managing and enhancing biodiversity and climate resilience, thanks to new schemes led by a partnership including Manchester Metropolitan University.

The Department for Education (DfE) has today (November 10) announced details of the National Education Nature Park project, which is part of DfE Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy and will see the University’s facilities and expertise shared with local schools and colleges.

Details have also been shared on the DfE’s Climate Action Award scheme, which will recognise the brilliant work being undertaken in schools and colleges to protect green spaces and promote biodiversity.

Through the scheme, Manchester Metropolitan will support teachers to develop their pupils’ skills and knowledge in biodiversity and sustainability further and celebrate their achievements.

Professor Liz Price, Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor Sustainability at Manchester Metropolitan University, said: “As a University Champion for the DfE National Education Nature Park scheme and one of the most sustainable universities in the UK, we are delighted to work in partnership to engage children, young people and their educators with nature, by sharing the University’s facilities and expertise with schools and communities.”

The DfE’s schemes will see the University working in partnership with the Natural History Museum, Royal Horticultural Society, the Royal Society, Royal Geographical Society, Learning through Landscapes, Esri UK and others.

The full details were announced here as delegates at COP27, the 27th United Nations Climate Change conference, came together for the summit’s Youth and Future Generations Day.
