Creative ways to have fun with your mates on a student budget
Student content creator Margarida’s money saving tips

Knowing how to manage your money as a student and make the most of your budget is key. But that doesn’t mean you have to say “no” to plans with friends, you just need to think of things to do that won’t break the bank.
To help, I’ve pulled together some helpful tips and ways that I’ve managed to save money as a student whilst still having fun!
5 ways cheap ways to enjoy life as a student in Manchester:
1. Host a Potluck Instead of Dining Out
Eating out can be expensive, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on social meals. Have you ever heard of a potluck? It’s a simple yet fun way to dine with friends. Everyone brings a dish, creating a variety of food without the hefty bill.
Want to make it even more fun? Try a themed potluck night! In the past me and my friends have planned an international cuisine night, where each person brings a dish from a different country. You could also do a budget challenge where everyone creates a dish with a set spending limit.
If you don’t feel like planning your own potluck, why not joining the Students’ Union Cultural Potluck? They will be hosting their next potluck on the 20 March!
2. DIY Instead of Paid Classes
Do you love crafting, pottery, or other creative activities? Instead of paying for expensive classes, visit budget-friendly stores like The Works or Poundland to grab affordable supplies and start creating at home.
With countless YouTube tutorials and TikTok guides available, you can learn a new skill without spending a fortune. Not sure which activity to try? A sip-and-paint night at home is a fantastic, budget-friendly option. Plus, you can invite friends over for a little company while you craft!
3. Explore free places in Manchester
Want to explore a new city but struggling with your budget? Manchester is full of free attractions!
The Manchester Art Gallery is a great option for a rainy day, while the Whitworth Gallery or Heaton Park are perfect for a sunny afternoon. These activities won’t cost you a penny and are great ways to spend the weekend.
If you’re still keen to travel beyond Manchester, consider getting a 16-25 Railcard for great discounts on train tickets across the UK.
4. Thrift shopping
If you’re looking to refresh your wardrobe without breaking the bank or harming the planet, why not give thrift shopping a go? Manchester is full of charity shops where you can find fashionable items and at very affordable prices, plus it’s good for the environment!
Places like Oxfam, British Heart Foundation are a great starting point. But if you’re up for an even bigger treasure hunt, keep an eye out on Eventbrite for KILO sales happening around town. The KILO sales do get quite busy but personally they’re my favourite to get the best deals.
Also, don’t forget to check out the Students’ Union website for vintage sales! For example, on 17 March, there’s a Vintage Football Shirt Sale and on 19 May they will be hosting another Cherry Blossom Vintage sale.
5. Student Apps
Being a student comes with plenty of perks! There are many apps that offer fantastic discounts on shopping, food, travel, and entertainment.
Personally, UniDays has been a lifesaver. I’ve used it to get discounts on my day trips through National Express and to save a few extra pounds when eating out at Las Iguanas, one of my absolute favourite spots!
Student Beans
This app provides access to exclusive student discounts from a variety of friends. You simply need to sign up and then you will have access to loads of in-store and online discounts.
UniDays
Similar to Student Beans, UniDays also allows you to access exclusive deals and you only need to sign up with your student email and verify it.
Too Good to Go
This app lets you buy surplus food from restaurants and bakeries at heavily discounted prices. It’s an easy way to save money and reduce food waste.
Student ID Perks
Remember, always carry your student ID and ask about discounts when shopping or dining out, as many places offer unadvertised student deals!
Also, if you’re a regular at a particular coffee shop or restaurant, don’t forget to ask if they offer loyalty cards. Over time, you can collect points or discounts, helping you save on those everyday purchases!
Did you know that Manchester Metropolitan also has a loyalty and Rewards app? It’s available both on IOS and Android. Every time you make a purchase on campus, just scan your app to collect points. Once you reach 200 points, you’ll get £2 credit added to your account. Plus, if you’re a coffee lover like me, the 11th drink is completely free!
With these creative money-saving tips, you can enjoy student life to the fullest without worrying too much about your budget. Have fun and make the most of your student discounts and local experiences!
