A Manchester student guide to travelling to and from campus
Walking – it’s free, easy and healthy
Manchester might feel big a first, but it’s surprisingly easy to get around on foot. If you’re living close to campus, walking is often the easiest way to travel to your lectures or the Library.
Average walking times to campus:
- From Hulme: 15 minutes
- From Rusholme: 25 minutes
- From Fallowfield: 45 minutes (maybe one for when the sun is out)

Walking travel tip – Always stick to the main streets that are busy and well-lit. At night try not to walk home alone. There’s always more safety in numbers.
For extra peace of mind, download the SafeZone App. It lets you check-in at any time of day, and quickly and discreetly call for help if you need it, whether it’s for first aid or in an emergency.
Cycling – fast and fitness focussed
If you own your own bicycle – great, but if not, you can rent a Beryl Bike. The Bee Network has cycle stations across Manchester, Trafford and Salford that are close to tram, train and bus stops. Perfect if you need to opt for two modes of transport into uni.
If you are using your own bike, we have secure bank stands outside most university buildings. Just remember to bring a bike lock with you to keep your bicycle safe. You can purchase one for £10 from our security team.

Manchester travel tips for students
Rush hour
The roads and public transport in Manchester can get very busy between 7:30–9:30am and 4–6pm, so it’s a good idea to leave a bit earlier to make sure you get to campus on time.
Quieter times to travel
If you want to avoid the rush, the best times to travel in Manchester are mid-morning (10am–12pm) and early afternoon (2–4pm).
Public transport at night
Buses run regularly along Oxford Road into the evening. For late-night options, please check the Bee Network website to plan your journey.
If you miss the last bus, don’t walk home alone at night. Instead, use a trusted taxi app such as Uber, Bolt or StreetCars.
Ask for help if you need directions
Mancunians are a friendly bunch and are happy to point you in the right direction. If you’re not sure where you need to be, ask other students, a member of university staff, or stop off in a nearby shop if you’re on the move.
