Construction works are to begin to create the cornerstone of the Manchester Metropolitan University Institute of Sport.

The refurbishment of the University building at 99 Oxford Road in Manchester city centre will start on Monday July 13. It will house the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences, the keystone of the Manchester Metropolitan University Institute of Sport

The Institute, which aims to be an international centre of excellence, brings together world-leading researchers in musculoskeletal science from the Faculty of Science and Engineering, sports business and community impact experts from the Faculty of Business and Law, and a range of experts from the Faculty of Health, Psychology and Social Care.

Once the revamp and conversion of 99 Oxford Road is completed and the premises reopens in 2022, the four-storey building will provide state-of-the-art teaching, research and support space for undergraduate and postgraduate students, and academic staff.

The new facilities will complement the University’s existing specialist sports and coaching provision at its Platt Lane Sports Complex in Fallowfield, south Manchester.

Building facilities

The outstanding Institute of Sport building in Oxford Road will be complete with the very latest technology and equipment for the advanced study and research of sport, including an MRI scanner and extreme climate environment chamber.

It will provide fantastic, purpose-built teaching spaces for around 1,500 sport and exercise science students.

Students will be taught in state-of-the-art super labs and seminar rooms with access to specialist facilities like cycle ergometer workstations.

High-spec research spaces like our treadmill laboratory and Biomex stair negotiation facility allow us to get to grips with the human body in all its states of fitness, peak performance and rehabilitation.

The Institute of Sport facilities will also provide a world-class environment for our talented athlete scholars, elite athletes who are studying at the University.

The redevelopment of the building is part of the University's ambitious Estates Masterplan Investment Programme to transform its campus over the coming years.
