Writing Feedback: how our Academic and Study Skills Tutors can help

If you would like to receive some developmental feedback prior to submitting an essay, assignment or your dissertation, you can submit a request via this form. We can help with a range of queries and show you where to go for further help if required.

To get the most from our advice, you might choose for us to focus on, but are not limited to, areas such as academic writing style, grammar, or to know if you are writing critically. We’ll review a sample of your work and provide enough feedback based on your request for you to apply our comments to the rest of your assignment. If you have follow-up questions you can always get back in touch.

Feedback is provided by our Academic and Study Skills Tutors, not a subject specialist for your course.

Please note this is not a proofreading service, it is designed to help you to identify areas for development and to learn how to correct them.

If you encounter issues with this form, please contact us at studyskills@mmu.ac.uk. Alternatively, if you’d prefer, you can arrange a one-to-one appointment to discuss aspects of your work.

You can also learn how to develop your writing by using our online resources or taking part in a virtual writing workshop or course.

If English is your second or additional language, check out the support available from the Coaching for Academic English programme, including help to use language appropriately in an academic setting and develop your writing.

Studiosity: available for foundation, first year undergraduate and level 7 apprentice students only

Studiosity: available for foundation, first year undergraduate and level 7 apprentice students only

We know it can sometimes be hard for new students to adapt and transition from school or college to academic writing at university level, so we’ve connected with Studiosity, an external online service, accessed via Moodle. Studiosity will review your draft work for coursework-style assessments and give you quick feedback about how to improve your academic writing style. Read the Studiosity Privacy Notice.

Studiosity is provided in addition to the academic study skills support offered as part of your course and from the Learner Development team.

  • What is Studiosity?

Studiosity is available 24/7, 365 days a year and offers general writing feedback on any stage of your coursework-style assessment draft from 500 to 5500 words.

As a starting point for feedback on your writing at university, they will provide feedback on key elements of academic writing, such as grammar, punctuation, language and structure.

It is available for each foundation year, first year undergraduate, and level 7 apprenticeship student to make up to ten submissions during the academic year.

  • Are there any limitations on the feedback from Studiosity?

    Studiosity is not:

    • Able to give an indication of the mark or grade you will receive when assessed by your Manchester Met tutors.
    • A replacement for using the University-based support provided by tutors and academic study skills experts.
    • A marking or proofreading service.
    • Able to correct every error in your work, or able to identify every area requiring development.
    • Subject-specific. An academic writing specialist, not someone with knowledge of your course or topic, will review your work.
    • Able to provide feedback on course-specific referencing, only general referencing advice. Seek advice on referencing from your tutor or the Library.
    • Able to check your work for instances of plagiarism. (Visit Skills Online on Moodle to understand what plagiarism is and how to avoid it.)
    • Able to make suggestions when the work is exam based.
    • Staffed by Manchester Met staff.
  • Who can use Studiosity?

This service is offered to foundation year, first year undergraduate and level 7 apprentice students to support their transition to university and be successful at academic writing. Elligible students can submit up to ten pieces of written work. It is provided in addition to the dedicated academic study skills support offered to all Manchester Met students as part of their course, and from the University’s Learner Development team, and in addition to the Coaching for Academic English offered to international students.

  • How long will it take to receive feedback?

You should receive feedback on your writing within 24 hours of uploading it. The Studiosity system alerts you to the feedback return time before you upload a document. You will receive an email notification when your feedback has been completed and is ready for you to read.

  • How do I submit to Studiosity?

Watch this short video to see how to log in and submit your work.

Login to Moodle and select ‘Academic Study Skills’. Click on the link to Studiosity and you’ll be taken to an external website where you can follow the instructions to submit your work.
