Manchester Met is committed to promoting a safe, supportive and inclusive campus environment for every member of our community. Discrimination, victimisation and harassment are taken seriously.

What is a hate incident?

A hate incident is any action that is targeted at a person, or a person’s property, because of hostility or prejudice in relation to:

  • disability
  • race or ethnicity
  • religion or belief
  • sexual orientation
  • transgender identity
  • alternative sub-culture hate crime.

Hate incidents come in many different forms, and may not necessarily be physical violence. Someone using offensive language towards you, or harassing you, is also a hate incident.

When and why should you report it?

Even if you might just want to shrug it off and forget about it, if a hate incident happens to you or you witness it happening to someone else, it is important that you report it.

By reporting hate incidents when they happen, the police can investigate and stop it from getting worse, for you or someone else. They can also use that information to better understand the level of hate incidents in your local area and improve how they respond to them.

How should you report it?

A hate incident in any form is wrong and should be reported at the earliest opportunity. You can provide as much or as little personal information as you wish. With your details an incident can be investigated fully and you can get the support you need. If you choose to make an anonymous report, the information will be used for monitoring purposes.

There are different ways to report a hate incident:

  1. Directly to the Police. Call 999 if it is an emergency or you are in danger. Otherwise, call 101 at any other time, visit your local police station or report the incident online.
  2. Online via our Report + Support website allows you to report an incident online, and you can choose to report anonymously if you wish. Our Student Services team monitor incident reports and will be in contact within 2-3 working days to discuss the incident and offer you support.
  3. On campus via our hate crime reporting centre, located at the Students’ Union Advice Centre, whereby trained staff can report a hate crime or incident on your behalf and also provide you with advice and support.
  4. Off campus. Manchester Student Homes are also a third party hate crime reporting centre and are based in Fallowfield.
